Issue 1424 - UP

SALE!
Next week should have seen the start of the Paralympic Games. The cover features Jean-Baptiste Alaize, one of the many athletes whose incredible stories have transcended sport and gone onto change the world. We speak to two-time gold-medal winner Jonnie Peacock about the psychology of overcoming the odds, and how the movement founded by a Jewish refugee who came to Britain left us with one of our proudest legacies.

Following the hard work of the Ride Out Recession Alliance, the Westminster government announced they are extending the eviction ban – but thousands of families still face as uncertain a future as ever. We talk to those at risk of losing their homes and highlight a campaign looking to tackle the problem of empty properties on a global scale.

Also inside…

- Star of Lucifer and Miranda’s boyfriend, Tom Ellis talks about making it big in Hollywood in this week’s Letter To My Younger Self
- Why is Boycie big in the Balkans? We hear straight from the Only Fools and Horses mouth as actor John Challis explains Del Boy & co’s enduring appeal
- It’s probably been experiencing a lot more action than usual so our friends at the Restart Project tell us how to fix our TV remotes
- And vendor Easton shares his view of a much quieter than normal London

Plus much, much more!

The Big Issue

The Big Issue’s own-brand products support the creation of a range of work-based opportunities for disadvantaged people.
The Big Issue has spent over 27 years at the helm of self-help revolution. It all began with the launch of The Big Issue magazine in 1991, which was created to offer homeless and disadvantaged people the opportunity to earn a legitimate income by selling a magazine on the streets. Since then over 200 million copies magazine have been sold by over 100,000 people. Vendors buy the magazine upfront for £1.25 and sell it on to the public for £2.50, and in doing so each runs their own micro-enterprise. In 2005 Big Issue Invest was launched, with the aim of extending The Big Issue’s mission by financing the growth of social enterprises and charities across the UK. To date the organisation has directly invested in over 350 such organisations, and manages or advises on more than £170 million of social funds.
