In this week's Magazine...
This week, street papers from across the globe gathered in Athens. It was a summit looking at how publications like The Big Issue can help those in real poverty work their way back into society.
We caught up with Greek economics pin-up Yanis Varoufakis. He talks bandits, brexit and why The Big Issue model works. Just don’t call him handsome. Got it. Not handsome. Not at all.
Responsible for two of the most famous comedy characters of all time – Frasier and Sideshow Bob – Kelsey Grammer, avowed Republican, dissects the situation in the States that allowed Trump to rise. Great insight.
John Bird, meanwhile, also looks at Trump. The only way to stop such dangerous bar-room bores from moving up, he says, is by participating in the process. We can’t stand by and carp.
And Damian Barr never misses in his columns. This week he writes following the Orlando club massacre. It’s a piece that’ll stay with you.
Our Letter To My Younger Self is with little Jimmy Osmond. His has been a crazy life. He regrets not being a better friend to Michael Jackson. He now owns the Andy Williams theatre. There’s a lot in here…
Our featured vendor this week is Polly Baggott who sells in Cardiff city centre. A former teacher she fell hard and quickly into homelessness. She has only been selling for three months. “It lifts me from that terrible poverty where you have nothing,†she says.
We also have a great piece celebrating Independent Bookshop Week.
Please note this edition is no longer on sale with Big Issue vendors and so is classed as a 'back issue'. All back issues are priced at £4 per copy plus P&P
